What grounds you as a person?...

In a world full of chaos. Seek places of peace. Where your mind and body, can relax, reflect, and recharge.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, to be grounded is to be:

"mentally and emotionally stable: admirably sensible, realistic, and unpretentious."

Here are a few ways to feel more grounded:

  • Remind yourself where you are.

  • Connect with your five senses.

  • Get outside.

  • Walk barefoot in nature.

  • Watch the sunrise.

  • Watch the sunset.

  • Watch the buds on the trees blow in the wind.

  • Set an intention.

  • Have a few consistent rituals that bring you joy.

  • Use grounding affirmations.

When I think of being grounded, in general, I think of feeling a sense of purpose. I often contemplate what is my purpose, do you? I know that to live a purposeful life is different than the genuine understanding of what our purpose is though. I think that to live true to myself and to feel like I am living with my true purpose in mind is to welcome the feeling of being grounded with open arms and an open heart.

To feel a sense of fulfillment, a void filled, a contentment that flows so deep into your heart that your soul feels like its shining as bright as the sun. This is what I feel when I truly grasp the feeling of being grounded. I believe that when you feel grounded as a human you also feel a connection to your sense of purpose in your life. A purpose that you feel you were brought into this world to chase after. A purpose that makes you want to really live/follow your dreams and consistently breathes energy into you, coincidingly, lighting your soul on fire.

How does one live to feel grounded?

Think about the way you feel when you go to the ocean. When you first take off your shoes, socks, and wiggle your toes into the sand. That feeling that you feel when you are connected to the earth. You feel nature in between your toes. You hear the ocean waves crashing along the shoreline, the air fills your lungs, you feel a sense of connection to the world; the physical feeling of connecting with and to nature.

Think about the way you feel when you decide to sit on the grass at a park to have a picnic. You find a flat area to lay your blanket on the grass or perhaps you brave the little grass tickling you and sit directly on the grass. You are present in the moment. The sun is shining down onto your picnic, and you hear birds chirping on the tree in the near distance. You inhale, grasp a feeling of contentment, and exhale. Mentally you have let go of the worry, the anxiety, the self doubt, the overwhelm, the exhaustion and the constant demand of stressors; you have checked out of the responsibility realm and checked into the nature realm.

Think about when you are doing your morning stretch when you first wake up. You have a minute of solitude with yourself and your being. You slowly reach your hands up into the air, opening them wide as if to hug the sun rays that are beaming through your window, rising above and over you. You feel a connection to your body and feel secure in who you are. You have a feeling of being whole and both a feeling of gratitude and a feeling of love for what your body does for you. You have physical and emotional stability; you are balanced.

How does one feel more grounded? How do we find our purpose? How do we embrace our passions and listen to our calling in the world?

Here are 5 specific ways to help you feel more grounded:

1. Be confident and strong in knowing your self-worth. What makes you genuinely happy? Surround yourself with those things. The positive energy you put out will come back to you. Be confident in what you are passionate about and embrace them full heartedly. To be strong in knowing your self-worth is what will make you shine brighter, feel happier, and move with intent to a feeling of grounded in oneself.

2. Trust yourself. Listen to yourself. Stop self-sabotaging yourself and breathe positive energy into your thoughts. To feel fully grounded is to be in tune with what your mind, body and presence in the world is telling you. Breathe and accept yourself with Gratitude.

3. Create space for mindfulness. Journaling is my favorite way to do this. Allow your mind time to escape. You know those few moments you have in the shower, and you start thinking, you have all of these bright ideas, but then you likely get distracted or forget what those ideas were later. Start jotting them down. I keep a little notebook outside my bathroom to keep me inspired and grounded.

4. Focus on the now. Be present. Put the phone away. (after you read this). Turn the tv off. Close the laptop momentarily. Stop multi-tasking. Stop rushing around. Just PAUSE and be in the present moment. Take the minute to look around and embrace what is around you. Too often in our present world we are rushing from one place, event, gathering or meeting to another. I know we are all busy and have places to go, people to see, work to be done. My tip for feeling more grounded is to simply incorporate the time to truly slow down and pause yourself (when possible) and embrace the environment and its entirety around you. Until you are able to be fully present in any given circumstance you are likely missing out on that feeling of fulfillment.

5. Stay connected to nature. Feel the wind in your hair. Watch the sunset. Run with your feet in the sand. Throw that rock into the lake. Take that unexpected trail. Go on an adventure. Life is a true blessing, and your passion is waiting for you to chase it.
